2010 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A terrific compact suv. introductionthe ford escape looks like a little truck among small suvs. Its styling reminds us of ford's larger, truck-based sport utility vehicles. The escape's ride height and seating position are a bit higher than competitors such as the honda cr-v, and it can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is substantially more than most other vehicles in the class.  yet the ford escape still delivers the advantages of unit-body, car-based competitors such as the honda cr-v. All variants, including the v6 and escape hybrid, deliver some of the best epa mileage ratings in the class. All models are offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.  for the most part, the hybrid drives just like a conventional gas-only escape. It's a well-executed package. Folding the rear seats opens a good sized cargo area with a flat floor, and space behind the seat surpasses that in the trunk of a typical sedan. There are lots of interior storage spaces, the finish is upscale and pleasing, and feature function and switches are among the best.  escape was redesigned for 2008. For 2010, changes are minor. An integrated blind spot mirror, mykey programmable vehicle key, rear view camera system, and active park assist are now available, and the escape also features hands-free sync with traffic, directions & information. All the features improve safety and reduce driver distractions.  the ford escape remains one of the more appealing vehicles in its class, regardless of price, and certainly one of the better values. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and a six-speed automatic 1,210) is optional. The xls comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, power windows, mirrors and locks, an am/fm stereo with cd and auxiliary jack, rear window defroster and 16-inch steel wheels.  options for the xls include remote start 345), sync 395), side step bars 345), and a security system 250).  the escape xlt 23,540) and xlt 4wd 25,290) add more standard features, including upgraded cloth upholstery, a power driver's seat, cruise control, privacy glass and 16-inch alloy wheels. A 240-hp, dual overhead cam 3. 0-liter v6 1,000) is optional on the xlt, and includes the six-speed automatic.  options for the xlt include a variety of packages, with the most comprehensive, package 204a 2,230), including a cargo cover, roof rack, wet towel bin, sync, a moonroof, leather, and ambient lighting. There is also premium sound with seven speakers 395), a dual-headrest dvd entertainment system 1,995), sport appearance package 895), 17-inch alloy wheels 695), and towing 345).  the escape limited 25,270) and limited 4wd 27,020) come standard with the v6 and automatic, plus leather seating, a six-cd changer and automatic headlights.  options for the limited include package 302a 2,250), consisting of the moonroof, premium audio system, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, reverse-sensing system, rear-view camera, and universal garage-door opener; and navigation with the premium sound 1,995).  the escape hybrid is available in two trim levels, the base version 29,750) and the base with 4wd 31,500); and the hybrid limited 32,260) and hybrid limited 4wd 34,010). The hybrid limited versions are equipped similarly to the limited models, but add the hybrid powertrain. Unlike some mild hybrid suvs, the escape hybrid can run on 100 percent electric power up to about 25 mph.  safety features include front- and side-impact airbags for front occupants and curtain-type head protection airbags for all outboard seats. The side curtains can remain inflated for several seconds in the event of a rollover, and are designed to slide between the side glass and occupants if the people are oddly seated or resting heads against a window. For starters, the escape sits a bit higher than many competitors, and the high profile is enhanced by its design.  the grille looks like it was designed for a truck. The headlights are essentially connected to the grille, and shaped to create a family resemblance with ford's edge crossover suv. Yet the grille itself is tall and flat and stacked right on top of a skid plate-type fascia that flows under the bumper. The escape's beltline, or the crease that runs just under the windows, is high, too, and its roof pillars are blacked out. The taillights have a clear band that wraps around the rear corners. The lower bumpers and rocker panels are now painted to match the body on all models, rather than molded in a matte finish. In total, the effect is cleaner and more polished than previous models, and it's all quite handsome.  the side mirrors are large, but their shape generates little noise as air speeds over them. The roof, too, is designed to reduce interior noise. Recessed channels running its length are intended to move air more quietly over the surface. Horizontal ribs underneath the panel add structure, which limits flex in the metal and reduces booming noise inside at high speeds.  we're fond of a couple of features in back of the escape. A new step pad on the bumper provides secure footing for anyone who steps up to put something on the roof rack, and the two-piece tailgate is handy. The rear glass can be popped open with the key fob, so dropping small items like a gym bag into the cargo area is much easier than it might be with some competitors, which require hefting the entire gate upward. interiorthis is one of ford's best interiors in terms of the look and feel of materials used. It looked like the lacquered finish on a fine piano. The satiny black or silver used in lower trim levels isn't bad, either. Yet the highlight is a woven-look, rubberized trim on the dash and console. It looks sporty and suited to a more expensive car.  the escape features upholstery cloth made from 100-percent recycled material. Overall, though, the seats are smaller than those in a larger sport utility. Drivers with big frames might find them small. There's not an abundance of side bolstering, but that makes it easier to slide into the seats, and there's enough to keep occupants solidly in place during the type of driving a typical escape owner is likely to undertake.  the gauges are clustered in a shaded binnacle that can be absorbed in a glance: tachometer left, speedometer right, with fuel and coolant temperature in the middle, along with an easy-to-read trip- and systems-info display. We absolutely loved this, because it includes a menu that allows the driver to easily cycle through and change features such as headlight-off delay and auto-locking.  the gauges and switches feature ford's new signature backlighting style, which the company calls ice blue. No gripe here, as the bluish white is crisper and brighter than conventional green-yellow or orange lighting. The problem is the script on the gauges, and particularly the speedometer. The big vents at the ends move lots of air, and there are two more in the middle near the top of the center stack. These can be aimed to avoid blasting the driver’s hands or face with a rush of air. At the very top sits a neat display that shows compass heading, date and time, exterior temperature and, on models so equipped, the two interior temp settings.  when it comes to placement and function of switches, the escape is first rate, and examples are easy to find. When the driver rests his or her left for.

2010 ford edge review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Benefiting from an available all-wheel drive and a fully independent suspension, the edge is easier to control than a truck-based suv in the snow or on wet, slippery roads. Getting in and out of it is easier, too. Yet it gives up nothing in passenger and cargo space. In fact, the back seats in the edge are roomier than those in the explorer, a benefit of its design.  the edge is not small. Considered a midsize crossover utility vehicle, the edge competes with the nissan murano and toyota highlander. All of these vehicles are larger than they look, a result of their slippery styling.  we found the edge roomy and comfortable with fully foldable seats for carrying larger cargo. It drives well, with good performance from a modern v6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.  the edge has a contemporary look we find appealing. We like its bold chrome grille. Changes for 2010 are relatively minor. Most significant are engine improvements resulting in fuel economy gains of one to two miles per gallon. All models are powered by a 3. 5-liter v6 engine that produces 265 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque, coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. Options include a convenience package, which includes an auto-dimming mirror, reverse sensing system, automatic headlamps, door-entry keypad, steering-wheel audio controls, and satellite radio 845), and a roof rack 95).  the edge sel fwd 29,920) and sel awd 31,770) add fog lamps, six-way power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, keyless keypad entry, six-disc cd changer, automatic headlights, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a vehicle information center. The sel rapid spec package 202a 2,555) includes the leather comfort package (which consists of leather upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, particulate air filter and six-way power fold-flat front passenger's seat), and adds 18-inch chrome wheels and 245/60r18 tires. Other options include a cargo package 555), panoramic vista roof 1,595), ford's sync entertainment and communications system 395), navigation 2,380), and dvd entertainment 1,995).  the edge limited fwd 32,720) and limited awd 34,570) come with leather upholstery, ford's audiophile sound system with nine speakers, ford sync communications and entertainment system, rear park assist, heated front seats, flat-folding six-way power adjustable front passenger seat, memory for the driver's seat and exterior mirrors, second-row reclining and power-folding split seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, universal garage door opener, interior air filter, heated mirrors, and p245/60r18 tires on chromed alloy wheels. Items not included as standard on the limited are available as options, for the same prices as on the sel.  the edge sport fwd 33,920) and sport awd 35,770) come with unique features, including leather seating with alcantara suede inserts; an eight-piece body kit with special front and rear fascias, body-side cladding, and side-skirt rocker moldings; and 22-inch machine-polished wheels. Options available on other trim levels are also available on the sport.  safety features that come standard on all models include dual front airbags, seat-mounted side-impact airbags for the front seats, side-curtain airbags with rollover protection for both rows of seating, anti-lock brakes, traction control, advancetrac electronic stability control with rollover mitigation, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Rear park assist is available and can help alert the driver to objects or people behind the vehicle when backing up. walkaroundthe ford edge is bigger than it looks in photos. The reason is that it has a wide track and a long wheelbase with short overhangs. The edge is almost eight inches shorter in overall length than the ford explorer yet its wheelbase is just over two inches shorter. Also, the track on the edge is over three inches wider while the overall width is about two inches wider. The long wheelbase and wide track are not just about looks; they make for a more stable vehicle because the majority of the mass is inside the wheels. Visually, this aggressive stance makes the edge stand apart from the relatively tippy look of traditional suvs.  the edge features ford's bold, american design. The big chrome grille is placed well forward and has wide chrome slats that merge into the relatively small headlights at each side. The high hood is short as the windshield rakes forward more like a sports car or modern minivan.  despite having a relatively high waist line with shallow side windows, the edge does not appear as stubby as photographs sometimes suggest. The sporty look is helped by pronounced fender flares and large wheels. The tailgate slopes quite significantly and is nicely rounded, avoiding the truck-like tailgates found on many suvs.  the vista roof adds expansive twin glass moonroofs that cover the whole roof, providing all passengers with a clear view of the sky. There is only a panel, of about one foot, between the front and rear panels that is not transparent. interiorthe edge combines a stylish, comfortable interior with lots of cargo-hauling utility.  front-seat occupants find a generous amount of room, largely due to the vehicle's generous width. There is a large center console with a storage box big enough for a laptop computer. Two decent cupholders reside alongside the substantial shifter. The center stack is angled outward to make it easy to reach the large knobs for the climate and entertainment controls.  the ford sync communications and entertainment system can be controlled via voice commands or dashboard buttons. It can recognize bluetooth-enabled cell phones, access their phonebooks, and play calls and read text messages through the speakers. It also has a usb interface to connect with ipods and other mp3 players (it will charge an ipod). To issue a voice command, the driver hits a steering wheel button and speaks the command. Occupants can tell the system to play a specific artist, album or track stored on an mp3 player. Headroom is also reasonable in the rear, even with the optional vista roof. The rear-center passenger even gets more room than normal in a vehicle of this size, thanks to the wide track. Getting in and out is easier thanks to rear wheels that are placed well back and thus cause less intrusion from the wheel wells.  cargo carrying is an area where the edge excels. The tailgate lifts to reveal a wide opening. With the rear seats in place there's a reasonable amount of cargo room, but pressing a button automatically reclines the rear seats to open up 69. 0 cubic feet of storage space on a nearly flat floor. Furthermore, the front passenger seatback can be folded forward to provide a mostly level floor space for long objects all the way to the dashboard. The rear seatback splits 60/40 for increased versatility and the back reclines several degrees on all models for improved rear-seat comfort. driving impressionunderway, the ford edge handles reasonably well, given its considerable size and weight. Having its wheels out near the corners aids stability and handling. This engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. We found the engine produced a good range of power at all speeds and the transmission shifted smoothly. We would rate the performance as middle of the pack: it's neither a barnburner nor a slug.

2010 ford flex review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Terrific family hauler. introductionthe ford flex is a full-size crossover utility vehicle that can seat up to seven adults and carry luggage or groceries at the same time. It's built on a passenger-car platform, as opposed to that of a body-on-frame truck, and thus has the basic stance and friendly driving characteristics of a car.  the flex is larger and roomier than the ford edge, and its three-row seating allows it to carry more people, and in more comfort. Its passenger-car platform makes it lower and more carlike than the explorer or expedition, and thus easier to drive and live with in daily use. Competitors for the flex include the chevy traverse, gmc arcadia, and buick enclave, though they are quite different in a variety of ways.  fuel economy is an epa-estimated 17/24 mpg city/highway for a front-wheel-drive flex, 16/22 mpg for an all-wheel-drive model, and that's on regular 87 octane gasoline.  for 2010, the major change for the flex is the availability of ford's strong ecoboost turbocharged 3. 5-liter v6 engine. Ecoboost utilizes advanced turbocharging technology to deliver the fuel efficiency of a smaller engine with the power and performance of a larger engine. Ecoboost includes two turbochargers and direct fuel injection. The 3. 5-liter v6 ecoboost engine in the flex is rated at 355 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, yet with no penalty in fuel economy compared to the standard non-ecoboost 3. 5-liter v6, which is rated at 262 horsepower. In the flex, the ecoboost engine will be available only with all-wheel drive.  also new for 2010: active park assist, an autofold 60/40-split second-row bench seat, mykey programmable vehicle key, trailer sway control, tilt-telescoping steering wheel. The flex sel awd 33,120) adds all-wheel drive. The sel convenience package 1,000) adds 110-volt power inverter, power adjustable pedals with memory, power liftgate, memory driver's seat and side mirrors, door-mirror mount puddle lamps, and heated mirrors. The sel awd is also available with the ecoboost v6 engine 36,115).  flex limited 37,165) adds hid headlamps, power multi-function door mirrors with puddle illumination, power-opening liftgate, p235/55r19 bsw tires, 19-inch polished alloy wheels, 110-volt power outlet, power-adjustable pedals with memory, ambient lighting, second-row footrests, perforated leather seating surfaces (for first and second rows), first-row memory seats, microsoft sync system, and navigation. The flex limited awd 39,015) adds all-wheel drive. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes (abs), advancetrac electronic traction control, rsc roll stability control, brake assist, and electronic brake force distribution (ebd). Adjustable pedals come on the limited model. All-wheel drive is available for the sel and limited. walkaroundthe ford flex looks boxy, in an attention-getting and stylish sort of way, but boxy nonetheless. The hood and roof are long and flat, the windshield stands tall and proud, corners are squared-off, side body panels are vertical, side glass is nearly vertical, and the tailgate could be plotted with a t-square. The overall box shape suggests interior room and maximum space utilization. Many would also find the shape honest, simple and elegant.  people seeing the flex for the first time generally agree it has presence and a variety of upscale cues. Those who find it attractive are reminded of the mini clubman and toyota fj cruiser, both of which share basic flex proportions and even color-contrasting tops.  the flex may at heart be a functional people and cargo-carrier, but it's certainly not shy when it comes to exterior design. There's design everywhere, both in the overall look of the vehicle and in the details. A fair amount of brightwork, just short of bling, sets the flex apart and communicates upscale intentions. A signature three-bar ford grille in a muted silver finish extends across the front. Front bumper foglights are encased in highly reflective jeweled surrounds. Door mirror housings are not only chromed, but the caps have little tab-like crenellations that sparkle in sunlight. Big, bright 19-inch polished alloy wheels on the limited suggest lincoln more than ford, as do large chrome door handles, bright window surrounds, and a shiny band running across the tailgate that repeats the front grille theme.  beyond the brightwork, the flex has a series of small, horizontal, body-color indents stamped into the door panels. These not only visually lengthen the vehicle and break up mass along the sides, but likely also strengthen the panels and reduce oil-canning noise within the doors. Sure, such detailing is a little finicky and over the top, but the flex would look a lot heavier if the indents weren't there. Another flex signature is the optional roof color of either warm white or silver.  the flex is taller than most station wagons but significantly lower than such traditional suvs as the explorer and expedition. The flex on the inside looks full, complete, spacious, roomy and luxurious. All the basics and most of the details are well covered.  on opening a door and seeing the flex interior for the first time, the impression is rich and inviting. Color coordination is carefully managed. Materials, plastics, fabrics, leathers and carpets are well matched with textures and sheen is nicely controlled. The visual impression is more lincoln than ford, and definitely upscale.  the impression of comfort and luxury is reinforced by large door openings and excellent entry and egress for all three seat rows. Perforated leather inserts and smooth leather seatbacks are on the front seats, but only leather inserts in the middle seats (vinyl everywhere else) and all-vinyl seats in back. There is a caveat, though, in the form of fairly aggressive headrests ford claims are mandated by new federal safety standards. Maybe so, but other vehicles that must meet the same requirements seem to have less intrusive headrests.  second-row seats offer generous legroom and basic support good for long trips, and are marginally less supportive and comfortable than those in front. The second-row seats are adjustable fore and aft, and they can also be folded through an electric switch to enable third-row access. Push a button in the c-pillar and the seatback folds f.
